    Job Description

    NREL's Mechanical & Thermal Engineering Sciences (MTES) Directorate has an opening for a full-time Senior Researcher to help lead laboratory efforts in industrial decarbonization. The position will report to the Building Thermal Energy Science Group Manager.

    MTES drives technological innovation in energy efficiency, sustainable transportation, and renewable power. It provides scientific and engineering expertise to a variety of federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) and Office of Science (SC), as well as university and industry partners.

    The primary responsibility of this role is to help lead laboratory efforts in industrial decarbonization. The position will help ensure emerging laboratory R&D in industrial decarbonization is at the leading edge and coordinated with ongoing investments in the Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES) research platform.

    The successful candidate will work closely with the laboratory leadership team, which includes associate laboratory directors (ALDs), ARIES leadership, center directors, laboratory program managers, and research advisors.

    Key Areas of Responsibility:

    • Help develop a vision and strategic plan for laboratory research, development, and demonstration in industrial decarbonization, including the following industrial sectors: iron/steel, cement, and ammonia .

    • Alignment of industrial decarbonization research directions with the three NREL critical objectives: Integrated Energy Pathways, Electrons to Molecules, and Circular Economy.

    • Alignment of tasks/activities to the five ARIES research areas (Energy Storage, Power Electronics, Hybrid Systems, Future Energy Infrastructure, and Cybersecurity).Identify notable gaps or overlaps in ARIES infrastructure, asset utilization and alignment with research areas.

    • Provide thought leadership and strategic planning at NREL in scale up integrated energy systems research.

    • Support planning and hosting visits/meetings at NREL by DOE staff or leaders, industry and/or associations, and universities to strengthen NREL external relationships.

    Job Duties Include:

    • Works in close collaboration with the ARIES team as a member of the MTES Directorate.

    • Forecast operational trends for analysis and growth opportunities for ARIES.

    • Contribute to the development and implementation of strategies, policies, and practices.

    • Support technical coordination between internal and external stakeholders.

    • Support the maintenance and updating of the ARIES R&D plan.

    • Assist in coordination of technical reviews and in responding to requests for technical information.

    Basic Qualifications

    Relevant PhD and 15 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 18 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 20 or more years of experience . Exhibits an exceptional degree of ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness. Apply and/or develop highly advanced technologies, scientific principles, theories and concepts. Viewed as an international expert within the field. Demonstrates leadership of complex technical projects. Project management competence. Demonstrated management of complex and/or high impact projects. Outstanding technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills

    • Must be able to relocate to Golden, CO

    Preferred Qualifications

    • A PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, or a relevant technical degree.

    • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage complex and high-impact technical programs, and to design and implement effective work breakdown structures with an effective hierarchy of task leaders, project leaders, and sub-program managers.

    • Knowledge and application of principles and best-practices relating to decarbonization of industrial processes.

    • Providing strategic leadership for business intelligence and serve as a role model for effective and creative technical leadership

    • Ability to prepare effective communications for internal and external stakeholders both domestically and internationally

    • Effective stakeholder engagement to maximize outcomes targeting the technological and entrepreneurial innovation goals of the laboratory's scientific agenda.

    • Experience in understanding industry needs in energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.

    • Experience at successfully developing and forming interdisciplinary project team(s) that include national laboratories, industry, and universities.

    • Considered a leading authority domestically and internationally within this field of scientific research

    Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

    Job Profile: Researcher VI / Annual Salary Range: $137,600 - $247,700

    NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
