The Environmental Health and Safety Department (EH&S) has an outstanding opportunity for a Public Health Specialist in the EH&S Environmental Public Health (EPH) unit. This Public Health Specialist will be primarily supporting the University's Food Safety Program, including temporary food establishment safety and permitting. This position will review, inspect, and certify food establishments at the University. This position is part of the EPH team, which manages and implements the University-wide food safety, drinking water safety, pest control and zoonotic disease prevention, and recreational water (pool and spa) safety programs.
This position will provide subject matter expertise and guidance to University units, including student organizations. This position has an important role in upholding state, local and University food safety standards for the University community members, visitors, and the general public.
The specialist is supervised by the EPH program manager, and will work closely with the EPH team to develop and implement food safety program protocols, contribute public health expertise to emerging situations, and support all aspects of the EPH programs. In addition, this position will participate in efforts to respond to emergencies and incidents that have public health implications, including foodborne illness investigations.
This position supports the University's efforts to ensure a healthy and safe campus environment, and serves as a key conduit between non-university parties, student organizations, and health and safety oversight bodies. The Public Health Specialist must coordinate and collaborate with diverse stakeholders such as students, faculty, staff, vendors, and event organizers. This is an applied public health sciences role- requiring an understanding of the microbiology/environmental health interface as well as the state and local food safety and public health requirements, while applying these to UW food establishments and providing oversight in an educational, service-oriented manner. Occasional interfacing with local regulators may also be needed. Strong interpersonal communication skills are key.
The role also requires meticulous attention to compliance, effective written communication skills, a training mindset to provide educational outreach to inexperienced food handlers, and the ability to unite disparate groups. The University is a large and complex institution, and its food service events mirror that in diversity, size, and impact. The EPH team must also be responsive to short timelines; this is a fast-paced role, with many requests for support per day.
This position provides direct support for the University's EPH programs, whose core service is to improve public health and food safety in the greater UW community. The Public Health Specialist plays a key role in prevention of foodborne illness, not only for UW personnel and students, but also the general public that attend events hosted on campus, from football games to fundraisers. This position will directly contribute to and be accountable for creating and sustaining a culture of service, accountability, and excellence within the department and in the University's food service community.
The EH&S department works in partnership with the University's organizational units to meet occupational and environmental safety standards to provide a healthy and safe place of employment, and to protect our environment. Additionally, this position will help to adopt strategic planning initiatives and support data gathering for metrics and performance monitoring to ensure organizational efficiencies and desired outcomes are met. WORKING CONDITIONS
This position requires both field and office work. It also requires occasional evening and weekend work to inspect food services at large intercollegiate athletic events and other campus events.
This position requires the ability to perform work duties both indoors and outdoors in office environments, food establishments, and other field locations in a variety physical and weather conditions. Individuals filling this role must be able to travel on foot to locations across campuses. This includes being able to navigate stairs, sidewalks and pathways, as well as carrying and using field equipment (portable computers, environmental sampling equipment, and educational/enforcement documents).
