    Shift: Shift 1

    Work Schedule: 8 Hr (7:00:00 AM - 5:00:00 PM)

    Summary:

    Manages all aspects of the day to day pain management service with regard to patient follow-up, data collection, management of side effects, staff nurses/resident education, statistical compilation and epidural infusion pump inventory. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

    Responsibilities:

    1. Responsible for daily and PRN rounding on all patients under PAS care to assess for adequate analgesia.

    2. Manage side effects and adjust infusion rates/medications as required.

    3. Coordinates nursing staff education/in-servicing as needed. Determine individual education needs and administer accordingly.

    4. In-servicing of new nursing staff, orientation in pain management of post-operative patients, as well as epidural/PCA infusion pump use.

    5. Be available to residents / attending for research and data collection.

    6. Compile monthly/quarterly statistics for department and pharmacy.

    7. Submit forms to billing for reimbursement of PAS patient care.

    8. Ensure accurately recorded records for each patient and make available for reference, statistical analysis and patient follow-up.

    9. Serve as liaison between nursing staff and Pain Center staff on as needed basis.

    10. See all patients with epidural catheters in post anesthesia recovery to assess for adequate analgesia and ensure appropriate orders and adjust accordingly.

    11. Assist/be available to PAR staff for questions, teaching and pain management.

    12. Educate anesthesia residents to PAS policy/procedures on an individual daily basis.

    13. Keep accurate inventory of epidural pumps, including cleaning and repair.

    14. In-Service nursing staff and residents on epidural pump set-up and use.

    15. Ensure adequate and proper documentation of narcotic infusions and disposal.

    16. Follow-up on complaints and unusual occurrences related to the pain service.

    17. Assist with review and update of associated hospital policies and procedures.

    18. Patient teaching and reinforcement of epidural/PCA use as needed.

    19. Educate other services/departments on benefits and outcome of epidural use.

    20. Review and update pain assessment tools.

    Other information:

    Job Requirements:

    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

    • Three years nursing experience in a post-operative care, critical care, or ER setting.

    • Active Illinois Nursing License, BLS or ACLS card
