Mental Health Therapist

The Historic East Baltimore Community Action Coalition (HEBCAC) is seeking a Mental Health Therapist to work 30 hours per week to help facilitate a non-traditional, innovative and comprehensive system of mental health services to Baltimore City youth ages 18 to 24 who are participants in the HEBCAC Youth Opportunity (YO!) Center and the affiliated HEBCAC youth shelter program, The NEST.

Since 2000, the YO! Program has provided comprehensive services to out-of-school youth ages 18 to 24 and moves them to economic independence. YO! maintains an annual enrollment of 300 participants. Committed instructors lead classes so youth can get their high school equivalency certificates (GEDs) and then connect to high-growth careers. Advocates make referrals to supportive social services and offer leadership development opportunities.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide mental health services for YO! participants, as well as participants of affiliated HEBCAC youth shelter program, The NEST.

• Provide individual and group-based therapy as needed for YO! Participants.

• Maintain client records and data reporting which is inclusive of biopsychosocial assessments, mental health screenings, case notes and Individual Service Plans (ISP).

• Facilitate groups designed to address the specific needs of the youth, e.g. anger management, stress management, grief and loss, healthy relationships, etc.

• Track and complete daily contacts with individuals and groups and complete all necessary submissions and documentation.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Knowledgeable about community resources and government-based assistance programs to ensure participants have access to the full continuum of mental health services as needed.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating tact and diplomacy to consistently interact effectively and flexibly with diverse groups of people including executive management, staff, and the public.

• Through understanding of, application and experience working with youth who have experienced varied levels of trauma such as community violence, gun violence and/or domestic/intimate partner violence as well as mental health challenges such as: moderate to severe and seasonal depression, bi- polar axis 1 and 2, manic depression, anxiety and PTSD.

• An understanding of application and experience utilizing Trauma Informed Care, cultural effectiveness, motivational interviewing and other evidence based related practices.

• Effective practical knowledge of working with youth populations such as but not limited to youth who experience some level of homelessness, formerly incarcerated/ returning citizen(s) youth, LGBTQIA+ identified youth, foster care youth and expecting/parenting youth.

• Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and as an individual clinician with minimal to moderate supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Social Work, Clinical Counseling, Psychology or other closely related field.

• A minimum of two years professional experience (post- graduate) with some experience working with urban youth populations.

• Professional licensure by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists

Starting Salary Range: $47,500 - $83,300 Annually ($53,500 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
