  • POSITION SUMMARY

    Provides technical expertise, laboratory support, and fabrication services in support of the teaching and research missions of the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

    SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED:

    Direct report to BME Lead Administrator with supervision from and collaboration with BME faculty allowing latitude for independent judgment and action.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Engineering Support and Fabrication: 30%

    • Supervise and maintain the BME fabrication shop. Provide expertise and support in machining, electronics, and 3D printing.

    • Collaborate with faculty and students to design and fabricate parts and instruments for research laboratories.

    • Consult and assist with design and execution of research experiments.

    • Oversee and maintain space and specialized instruments in BME core laboratories (e.g., Mechanical Testing Lab, Ultrasound Lab, Cell Culture Lab, Cold Room).

    • Serve as member of the BME Core and Instructional Laboratory Committee.

    Student Projects and Design Education: 30%

    • Assist students in all stages of design projects from brainstorming to design and fabrication.

    • Assist instructors in academic design courses, namely the undergraduate Senior Design courses and the Master's in Medical Device Design program.

    • Supervise and maintain the BME Fabrication Shop and the BME senior design laboratory.

    • Train students in fabrication techniques.

    • Develop educational materials and modules related to engineering design and fabrication.

    Equipment Maintenance, Building Safety: 25%

    • Perform routine maintenance on departmental equipment. Fabricate or supervise fabrication of in- house equipment builds.

    • Consult with administration, faculty, and/or investigators regarding purchasing/replacing laboratory equipment.

    • Purchase consumable and non-consumable components as needed. Work with department faculty in purchasing for laboratory teaching modules.

    • Troubleshoot and repair departmental equipment as needed. Enhance/modify existing equipment to better meet the needs of the faculty and projects.

    • Serve as the BME building safety officer. Maintain core and teaching laboratory chemical inventory lists. Serve on-call for instrument emergencies. Coordinate annual laboratory safety training for lab staff and students. Maintain biosafety BSL2 standards in core laboratories.

    Independent and Collaborative Research: 15%

    • Develop, prepare and perform projects to further departmental and inter-departmental research projects.

    • Collaborate with other university departments and/or outside project members.

    Other special projects, assignments and duties as required.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Degree in engineering, engineering technology, or related field plus 3-5 years of experience; or an equivalent of education and experience. Diverse academic backgrounds and experience will be considered.

    • Expertise and experience in machine shop skills and management

    • Experience in design and prototype fabrication.

    • Ability to design, fabricate, and repair specialized parts and instruments for faculty research programs.

    • Ability to interact with students and foster an active learning environment

    • Desire to expand knowledge of the use and maintenance of a range of laboratory equipment spanning the fields of biomechanics, bioinstrumentation, biology, and microscopy.

    • Proficiency in CAD software, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom.

    • Experience in 3D printing technology is desirable.

    • Strong interpersonal, and communication skills, both verbal and written.

    • Strong organizational and lab management skills.

    • Expertise in the university Pay (P2P) Purchasing system is desirable.

    Pay Range

    Pay Range: $ 58,800 - $ 82,300 Annually

    The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
