    Position overview

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is one of 17 Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories. Operated by Stanford University on behalf of the DOE, SLAC develops and operates some of the world's premier science facilities, including the first hard X-ray free-electron laser. Researchers from SLAC and other premier institutions around the world use our facilities to investigate some of the most exciting and important problems facing our society in areas such as clean energy, environmental science, biomedicine, and advanced materials.

SLAC's Environmental Protection (EP) department is offering a summer internship opportunity for recently graduated or currently enrolled college students in environmental sciences disciplines who are seeking to gain practical work experience. This internship will primarily support SLAC's Stormwater and Industrial Wastewater Programs. SLAC campus is over 400 acres and contains a complex stormwater conveyance infrastructure that we build and maintain ourselves, like a small city. The intern will assist with developing, mapping, labeling and populating a comprehensive database of SLAC's stormwater infrastructure to assist in decision making and data management.

    Your specific responsibilities include:

    • Populate SLAC's stormwater catch basin database. This will entail visiting all catch basins on SLAC campus, photographing them, and logging information such as internal dimensions, coordinates, and condition.

    • Update SLAC's stormwater GIS maps, collect initial data for several new GIS maps, organize the data in a clear format to enable map build-out by SLAC's GIS specialists.

    • Review historical reports on SLAC's stormwater and sanitary sewer systems. Design a sampling plan to update historical studies. Develop an inventory of SLAC's groundwater infiltration locations, quantities, and salt contents.

    • Research and propose ideas to improve SLAC's stormwater management.

    Opportunities and Benefits:

    • Learn about GIS and other software such as PowerApps, MS Sharepoint, Excel

    • Opportunity to learn about SLAC and gain exposure to the work environment in a research and user facility.

Note: This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible temporary-nonexempt summer student position (work at 50% full-time equivalent or more), not to exceed 980 hours in six consecutive months. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated, and have US work authorization
