    POSITION DETAILS

    The Graduate Center of The City University of New York (CUNY) seeks a Financial Aid Counselor in the Office of Fellowships and Financial Aid. The Office of Fellowships and Financial Aid is responsible for providing in excess of $51 million in financial aid for students attending three CUNY colleges: Graduate Center, Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, and School of Labor and Urban Studies. This position reports to the Associate Director of Fellowships and Financial Aid.

    The Graduate Center is the focal point for advanced teaching and research at CUNY, the nation's largest urban public university. With over 35 doctoral and master's programs of the highest caliber, the Graduate Center fosters pioneering research and scholarship in the arts and sciences and prepares students for careers in universities and the private, nonprofit, and government sectors.     All full-time and part-time CUNY staff are expected to work in-person at their campus office 70% of their work time. For full-time staff, this is equivalent to 7 out of 10 days of in-person work in a two-week period (e.g., 7 days in-person, 3 days remote). This hybrid work schedule is subject to change.

    Duties include but are not limited to

    • Advises current and prospective undergraduate, graduate, and certificate students on various federal, state, and institutional financial aid policies and procedures.

    • Performs needs analysis, verification, loan processing, and satisfactory academic progress monitoring reviews.

    • Processes institutional, state, and federal student aid.

    • Certifies private loans.

    • Maintains active knowledge of federal, state and institutional regulations regarding student aid programs and disseminating information to students and colleagues as appropriate.

    • Serves as a resources and liaison with program offices, administrative offices and students regarding financial aid matters.

    • Serves as a financial aid counselor on duty and provides superior customer service.

    • Represents the Office of Fellowships and Finanical Aid on various college and University committees as needed.

    • Performs other duties as assigned which are reasonably within the scope of this job classification.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with faculty, staff and students.

    • Effective technology skills, including prior experience with PeopleSoft, Education Loan Management Resources (ELM), and/or CampusLogic.

    • Prior financial aid or higher education experience.

    • Excellent customer service and organizational skills.

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Sponsorship will not be offered for this position.

    CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

    Counsels applicants and students on a variety of issues related to financial aid eligibility and awards.

    • Counsels prospective and incoming students with regard to eligibility criteria and options, including academic standing requirements and appeals

    • Performs application intake, evaluation, processing and awarding

    • Verifies eligibility for federal and state financial aid programs including grants, scholarships, and guaranteed student loans

    • Evaluates and implements announced changes to financial aid programs; may supervise other Advisors

    • Prepares and updates financial aid databases and reports

    • Conducts group workshops and represents the financial aid office at various on- and off- campus events

    • Performs related duties as assigned.

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

    $54,313-$68,004/year. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
