  • Howard County General Hospital Emergency Department is seeking a CO Clinical Social Worker to provide services and continuity of care to clients/patients Emergency Department. The Clinical Social Worker will perform Psychiatric evaluation and diagnosis of psychiatric disorders and Substance Abuse Evaluations. Works with a multi-disciplinary team in the Emergency Department to provide quality psychiatric service. Obtains all insurance authorizations necessary to treat patients. Knowledgeable of Mental Health Resources in Maryland and proficient in formulating and implementing treatment and disposition plans.

    Documents all clinical activity in accordance with Johns Hopkins, and State of Maryland regulations.

    Specific Duties & Responsibilities

    • Responds in a timely manner to requests from Emergency Department Physicians for psychiatric Consultation.

    • Performs psychiatric assessment, formulates diagnosis, and in consultation with referring physician recommends and completes appropriate disposition.

    • Discusses case with Attending Physician to determine if the patient has been cleared medically and to determine why a consult is requested.

    • Provides requesting physician with results of assessment and disposition plan.

    • Reviews chart, and obtains all insurance authorizations necessary before providing service to a patient.

    • Contacts necessary insurance providers and obtains authorizations needed to complete disposition and documents in the chart.

    • Interview the patient and performs psychosocial assessment, mental status examination, and past psychiatric history.

    • Contacts family or any collateral informants necessary to provide information necessary to complete an assessment.

    • Formulates an appropriate treatment/disposition plan for the patient.

    • Develops a knowledge base of the Mental Health Service System necessary to make the most appropriate clinical disposition.

    • Effectively troubleshoots all systems when problems arise in effecting a clinically necessary disposition.

    • Assures that all appropriate documentation is complete according to standards to carry out treatment/disposition plan.

    • Completes all contacts necessary to arrange for appropriate disposition of cases and independently resolves problems with complicated dispositions.

    • Is aware of time constraints of patient flow in the emergency department and paces accordingly, and consistently evaluates all patients during a shift.

    • Provides appropriate sign-out either verbally or written on clinical and disposition status of patients to next shift staff member.

    • Works as a Team Member with all members of the Evening/Weekend Emergency Consultation team.

    • Attends all Staff meetings and administrative meetings as assigned.

    • Develops and maintains a collegial working relationship with all ED Staff.

    Documentation

    • Provides documentation of all clinical and nonclinical activities.

    • Maintains client files in an appropriate manner and complies with Johns Hopkins accepted record-keeping practices.

    • Charts are above 85% complete at chart reviews.

    • Knows and can implement all State of Maryland /Insurance/ and Federal mandated documentation.

    • Documents clinical assessment of all clients evaluated on the JHH Standard PES.

    • Evaluation form. Assessment information on PES has a 95% completion rate.

    • Documents all activities according to standards.

    • Work requires knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts.

    • Work requires analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.

    • Work requires the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time.

    • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.

    • Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.

    • Communication skills using the spoken word.

    • Ability to see within normal parameters.

    • Ability to hear within normal range.

    • Work requires occasionally using a keyboard to interact with a computer system.

    • Work requires proofreading and/or reviewing documents.

    • Work is generally performed in the Emergency Department where the conditions can be unpleasant and/or hazardous.

    • Requires varying shifts, days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Master's Degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education or an equivalent organization approved by the Council on Social Work Education.

    • Licensure, Certification, Registration: Licensure as an LCSW-C is required, and one must maintain a license throughout the duration of employment.

    • Must complete sufficient continuing medical education (CME) credits to satisfy Maryland license/license renewal requirements.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Two years of an emergency room or pediatrics social work experience.
