  • Clinical Laboratory Assistant

    Seeking a skilled Clinical Lab Assistant. Is that you?

    Work location: 3150 Horizon Rd. Rockwall, TX 75032 within the ER and Main Lab

    Work hours: PRN (Weekends and/or weekdays; day shift and/or night shift)

    Qualifications - External

    Here's What You Need

    Education

    • H.S. Diploma or Equivalent is required

    • Other - CLIAFE Must comply with CLIA regulations regarding foreign education equivalency is required

    Experience

    • 6 Months experience as a phlebotomist or completion of a one semester course in phlebotomy is preferred.

    • 1 year of experience waived testing (Flu, Covid, Strep, RSV, I-Stat Crea) AND phlebotomy is strongly preferred.

    Licenses and Certification

    • PBT(ASCP) - Phlebotomy Technician Upon Hire is preferred

    What You Will Do

    • · Specimen Integrity:

    • o For those entities performing phlebotomy; employee follows laboratory procedure for specimen collection, patient identification and labeling as appropriate for the age of the patient

    • o Follows laboratory procedures for handling, and processing in a manner which is appropriate and follows safety guidelines

    • o Follows laboratory procedures for handling unacceptable specimens

    • · Test Procedures:

    • o Follows established laboratory test procedures

    • o Performs procedures in other areas of the Laboratory as required by hospital entity

    • o Reports and evaluates test results

    • o Communicates and documents relevant patient data to appropriate personnel

    • o Communicates with nursing personnel if there is a delay in specimen collection or questions about orders

    • o Patient Treatment: Demonstrates competence in the performance of age appropriate patient treatment and individualizes care based on age specific criteria

    • · Laboratory Operations:

    • o Facilitates workflow process

    • o Helps other hospital and laboratory coworkers to provide timely patient care

    • o Processes specimens

    • o Demonstrates ability to perform specimen processing protocols

    • o Checks outstanding collection list

    • o Troubleshoots and follows through on outstanding collections which appear to have not been collected/received when expected

    • o Knows and uses computer downtime procedures as needed

    • o Relays information to next shift and coworkers

    • o Performs outpatient processing

    • o Inputs laboratory orders

    • o Calls physician for clarification of orders if necessary

    • o Performs medical necessity checking of applicable orders

    • o Stocks supplies in work area at the beginning and the end of the shift and/or as needed

    • o Gives proper notification when supplies need to be ordered

    • o Demonstrates active cost effectiveness

    • o Utilizes time between collections to accomplish other needed tasks (ex. supply management, housekeeping duties, checks with other areas and provides assistance)

    • · Professional Accountability:

    • o Participates in orientation and training of students, volunteers, new employees, and observers

    • o Maintains commitment to profession by attending continuing education sessions. (ex. Web seminars, ASCP seminars, Tarleton and Lab sponsored seminars by industry)

    • o Completes mandatory hospital/laboratory education and departmental competencies within required time frame

    • o Mandatory health requirements are completed within required time frame

    • o Completes assigned work within required time and offers assistance to other coworkers

    • o Uses laboratory equipment (computer, instruments, etc.) for hospital use only

    • o Time and attendance is satisfactory

    • o Employee exhibits a professional appearance

    • o Seeks assistance/supervision/consultation as needed and reports to supervisor any problems and/or solution regarding delivery of patient care

    • o Interacts professionally and pleasantly with all encountered and promotes customer satisfaction

    • o Performs patient care tasks in a manner enhancing the quality of care

    • o Adheres to THR Promise Behaviors

    • · Quality Control/Documentation:

    • o Quality control guidelines are followed

    • o Quality control and equipment maintenance documentation is in compliance with all departmental quality control procedures and all regulatory guidelines

    • o The data is accurate, complete, and legible

    • o Troubleshoots quality control and instrumentation effectively

    • · Safety:

    • o Incorporates safety/infection control measures into work practices

    • o Follows HIPAA guidelines

    • o Demonstrates knowledge and follows all hospital and lab safety/infection control policies and procedures

    • o Participates in required hospital/laboratory safety drills

    • o Utilizes the event reporting tool to document and report patient situations, on-the-job injuries, and medical device malfunctioning
