Know When It’s Time to Change Direction

Posted by

There is a saying that goes like this, “Winners never quit.” In most situations this may be true, but, there are times when you need to change directions. Years ago when the steel mills closed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, workers would continue to show up outside the mill and sit and wait. Even though it was final, and there was absolutely no chance that their mill would reopen, they sat waiting for it to reopen. Their ignorance led them to believe, that if they just waited long enough, their wishes would come true. Sadly the steel mills never reopened.

Life is filled with similar situations, where wishing and hoping will not work. No matter what you do, it will not get you the exact result you want. It is at that time, you must take stock of your options, and choose to alter your direction.

A more recent example of someone who altered her direction, when it became clear that the way she was going was not going to work out, is Bridget Lemberg. Bridget worked for a drug testing company, and when she discovered the company was going out of business, due to poor management, she quit. She could see that the operation could have been very successful, had the owners been more business minded. Armed with that information, she started her own company doing, you guessed it, drug testing. Today she is president of Forensic Fluids Laboratories, Inc., saliva (oral fluids) drug test and testing company, based in Kalamazoo, MI. In 2010 her company did close to $4.5 million in sales, and was listed at 167 on the Inc. 500.

A new saying that might be more meaningful today is, “Winners know when to change directions and do what it takes to succeed.” If you use that philosophy, you too could be successful.
