Robotic Surgery Offers More Healthcare Career Opportunities

A fast growing career opportunity for today's health care professionals can be found in the emerging science and art of robotic surgery.

The three major advances in robotic surgery include remote surgery, minimally invasive surgery and unmanned surgery. Robotic surgery offers several advantages over conventional surgery, including increased precision, miniaturization, smaller incisions, decreased blood loss, less pain and faster healing time. Other advantages are articulation beyond normal human manipulation and three-dimensional magnification resulting in improved ergonomics.

A growing number of medical centers are developing dedicated robotic surgical suites. Last year, Saint Joseph's Hospital formed the Visconti Center for Robotics, which houses multiple, minimally invasive robotic technologies. These include the daVinci Surgical System® for minimally-invasive cardiac, urologic, thoracic, gynecologic and general surgery procedures; the MAKO®plasty technology for partial knee replacement procedures, and the Hansen® Sensei Robotic Catheter System for advanced cardiac electrophysiology procedures, including treatment of atril fibrillation or AFib.

Robotics centers and suites like these are equipped with special robotics medical teams. Specifically trained in robotic surgical techniques, these team members often include physicians' assistants, nurses, surgical assistants and scrub techs.

If you would like to enter this promising new field, check out the International College of Robotic Surgery in Atlanta. It offers courses for caregivers, hospital administrators, patients and visitors. Also check out the Robotic Training Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
