5 Things You Can Ask Your Boss For This Year

If you're like many of us, you may feel stuck in a rut at your job. Sometimes, making a few changes can help improve your productivity and give you new enthusiasm for your job.

Jason Fried, a workplace expert, gave a short talk on CNN recently. He had some great ideas for things you can do to make a difference for things at your workplace.

Here are five things you can ask your boss for this year:

  1. Longer lunches - for some people, this will be difficult. Jason's idea is to ask for a two hour lunch, the catch is, making it a working lunch. Get up, take a break, and then come back and enjoy the quiet in order to get in a solid hour of uninterrupted work time.

  2. Ask for meeting agendas - meetings that don't have a preplanned agenda can end up being a huge waste of time. Try arguing that without an agenda ahead of time, it's difficult to prepare properly and you won't be able to contribute as much as you could.

  3. To skip some meetings - if most of the meeting isn't relevant to your work, ask to be excused. This will give you time to work on projects that are important and help you become more productive.

  4. Ask for more work - as your productivity increases, ask for more work. Everyone appreciates a go-getter. Especially if you're working on commission, you'll be able to increase your income at the same time.

  5. Ask for honest feedback - while these changes might improve your productivity, it is important to be sure that you aren't sacrificing the quality of your work. Once you make some of these changes, it's important to get some honest feedback on how it's going. This type of feedback can also help you identify other areas where you can improve.

Keep in mind that many of these changes will cause you to sacrifice social time with your co-workers. This time is important because it's the best way to build relationships and keep up to date with what is going on in the office. So, be sure to plan other times to connect with your coworkers.
