  • The Division of Family Planning and Preventive Services in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City seeks a full-time faculty member at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor to serve as Director of Research, dependent upon the finalist's qualifications. The successful applicant will join four full-time faculty members, a nurse practitioner, and two fellows in an ACGME-accredited Complex Family Planning Fellowship.

The division is a long-standing, active member of the NICHD-funded Contraceptive Clinical Trials Network (CCTN) and has a large clinical research program including industry-sponsored contraceptive trials. The research team currently consists of a research manager, two bilingual full-time research coordinators, and a research recruiter. Faculty members participate as Principal or co-Investigators and provide coverage of study visits. The successful applicant would serve as PI for CCTN studies and activities and prepare for successful reapplication when the current contract ends (2027). They would oversee, strengthen, and grow the research program, particularly through investigator-initiated NIH funded research proposals. They would also have the opportunity to work with the Director of Community Women's Health, also a member of the division, and engage in community-based participatory research as well as research on health disparities.

The Division has grown for over 20 years in a clinical environment that is supportive of abortion care. Faculty members collaborate closely with Maternal Fetal Medicine as well as genetics, other departments and schools at Columbia University Medical Center (e.g., adolescent medicine, biomedical informatics, School of Nursing, School of Public Health) and with the many reproductive health organizations based in NYC.

Clinical responsibilities will include general GYN with a Complex Family Planning focus and participating in the division's schedule for operating room coverage (D&E to 24 weeks, sterilization, hysteroscopy) and call from home. Clinical duties do not include obstetrics. The faculty practice and hospital clinics specialize in office procedures with opportunities to perform removal of non-palpable contraceptive implants, office hysteroscopy, colposcopy, LEEP, in addition to medical and surgical abortion care. All faculty members teach fellows, residents, students (medical, nursing, and public health). The position is available immediately.

We value a diverse and inclusive workforce. People of color, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ people are encouraged to apply. We consider all applicants regardless of religion, national origin, age, or pregnancy, marital, socio-economic status.

The candidate must have completed a Fellowship in Family Planning, be certified in OB/GYN, be certified or board-eligible in Complex Family Planning, have a Master's degree or PhD, and be eligible to obtain a New York State medical license. Previous Family Planning Fellowship leadership experience would be an asset. The ideal candidate should think strategically. The candidate must have demonstrated expertise in successfully designing, obtaining funding for, and carrying out quantitative and qualitative research. Experience leading investigator-initiated research is required. They must also have demonstrated ability in data management, statistical principles, data analyses, summarizing and presenting findings.

The patient/participant population is predominantly LatinX, thus a bilingual candidate (English/Spanish) is strongly preferred.
